Long weekends in 2027: bank holidays that stretch furthest

A bank holiday on a Monday or a Friday gives a three-day weekend for nothing. A bank holiday with a few days of annual leave next to it gives a much longer break for the price of those few days. This article uses the GOV.UK dates for 2027 to show which ones are worth building a break around, and the arithmetic behind each.

How the sums work

These windows only help if the dates fall inside your leave year, so check that first. Every period below is counted from the first non-working day to the last, using a Monday to Friday working week. The leave days are the weekdays you would book. All the dates are for England and Wales unless stated, and the weekday for each is taken from the GOV.UK list.

Whether bank holidays are paid days off for you depends on your contract. GOV.UK says bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave, so check that you are entitled to the day before you plan a break around it. The bank holidays and leave article goes through how the two fit together.

The best returns in 2027

Easter: 10 days for 4 days of leave

Good Friday is Friday 26 March and Easter Monday is Monday 29 March. Book Tuesday 30 March to Friday 2 April, and you are away from Friday 26 March to Sunday 4 April. That is 10 days for 4 leave days.

The break can be extended backwards. Booking Monday 22 to Thursday 25 March as well, eight leave days in all, gives you Saturday 20 March to Sunday 4 April. That is 16 days off.

Christmas and New Year: 9 or 10 days for 3 or 4 days of leave

Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday, so Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December are the bank holidays. Book Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 and Friday 31 December, and you are off from Saturday 25 December to Sunday 2 January. That is 9 days for 3 leave days. Adding Friday 24 December makes it 10 days for 4.

An employer can require staff to take leave over Christmas, and GOV.UK gives that example. If your workplace closes, those days may be fixed for you already.

Early May: 9 days for 4 days of leave

Monday 3 May is the early May bank holiday. Book Tuesday 4 to Friday 7 May, and you are away from Saturday 1 May to Sunday 9 May. That is 9 days for 4 leave days. Adding Friday 30 April makes it 10 days for 5.

Spring bank holiday: 9 days for 4 days of leave

Monday 31 May is the spring bank holiday. Book Tuesday 1 to Friday 4 June and you are off from Saturday 29 May to Sunday 6 June. That is 9 days for 4 leave days.

Late August: 9 days for 4 days of leave

Monday 30 August is the summer bank holiday in England and Wales. Book Tuesday 31 August to Friday 3 September, and you are away from Saturday 28 August to Sunday 5 September. That is 9 days for 4 leave days.

New Year's Day: 10 days for 5 days of leave

Friday 1 January 2027 is New Year's Day. Book Monday 4 to Friday 8 January, and you are off from Friday 1 January to Sunday 10 January. That is 10 days for 5 leave days. It is a lower return than the others.

Comparing the returns

Dividing days off by leave days gives a rough ranking for England and Wales:

Christmas has the best ratio and Easter gives the longest break for a modest number of days. If you have 20 days to spend, Easter and Christmas together use 7 of them and give 19 days off, which leaves 13 for the rest of the year. The right mix depends on how many days your contract gives you and whether the bank holidays are inside them.

Scotland and Northern Ireland

The GOV.UK list for 2027 differs in several places:

The St Patrick's Day date falls mid-week, so it works best with a day or two either side. The 4 January substitute in Scotland is the simplest return of the year: nothing needs booking for a four-day break.

Getting the dates approved

The popular bridges are the ones everyone wants. GOV.UK says an employer can refuse leave at a particular time but cannot refuse to let workers take the leave at all, and that workers generally need to give notice of at least twice as long as the leave plus 1 day. Four days of leave therefore needs at least 9 days' notice, and if your contract sets a different notice period, the contract applies. For Easter and the summer, ask well before that minimum.

Where two colleagues want the same week, an employer may well have to choose. Having a second-choice week ready makes that a quicker conversation. The planning a year of leave article shows how to count the days you have to spend.

Packing for a short break

A short break needs a small bag. A Ad weekend holdall holds three days of clothes. Rolling them into Ad packing cubes keeps a small bag organised.

For a UK break, a Ad road atlas is a cheap backup when the phone has no signal. A Ad compact travel umbrella fits in a coat pocket. A Ad travel adapter is only needed if the break is abroad.

If it is a flight, check the airline's cabin bag size for your fare before you pack, as the sizes are not the same across carriers.
